The first Dominican friars in Ireland arrived in 1224. To mark the 800th centenary of this event, we have compiled an open access resource for Irish Dominican history, including many rare and out-of-print works. It is our hope that this database, which will be expanded over time, will stimulate a new wave of research on the long and varied story of the Irish Dominicans.

Irish Dominican History: General

Irish Dominican Priories

Collected Biographies

We are grateful to the following for granting permission to reproduce articles published in their journals:

  • Catholic Historical Society of Ireland (Archivium Hibernicum)
  • Meath Archaeological & Historical Society (Ríocht na Midhe)
  • Franciscan Province of Ireland (Collectanea Hibernica)

The cost of scanning the majority of these historical resources was covered by a research project funded by the Irish Research Council: ‘Mapping the Manuscript and Cultural Heritage of the Dominican Order in Ireland’, directed by Dr Eleanor Giraud (University of Limerick).

We are grateful also to Four Courts Press for allowing us to reproduce Medieval Irish Dominican Studies, and to the Public Records Office, Northern Ireland, for allowing us to reproduce The Fottrell Papers.
