Irishmen in the Pope’s Army: Myles Keogh and the Battalion of St Patrick | Treasure Ireland

Myles Keogh and the Battalion of St Patrick
Play Video

Irishmen have long fought for pay in foreign armies, but did you know that in 1860 a large number of Irishmen signed up to fight in the Pope’s army? They were motivated, it seems, not by financial gain but by their Catholic faith. An 18-year-old Myles Keogh was one of them. He would go on to have a glittering military career. Acknowledgments: We are grateful to the Keogh family of Leighlinbridge for permission to film at their home.
