Dominican Women in Galway

Dominican Women of Galway
Play Video

One of the oldest female religious communities in Ireland is that of the Dominican nuns of Galway, founded in 1644. Their early history was very turbulent, however. Dr Bronagh McShane shares that exciting story with us in this lecture given in the Dominican church of St Mary on the Hill, Galway, on Tuesday 9 April, 2024. She is author of Irish Women in Religious Orders, 1530-1700: Suppression, Migration and Reintegration (Woodbridge, 2022), joint guest editor of ‘A New Agenda for Women’s and Gender History in Ireland’, Irish Historical Studies Special Issue (Nov. 2022); co-editor of Brides of Christ: Women and Monasticism in Medieval and Early Modern Ireland (Dublin, 2023) and contributor to volume one of the Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism (Oxford, 2023).
