Solemn Vespers – 800th Jubilee

To specifically mark the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order, which got its appoval from Pope Honorious III on the 22nd of December 1216, various Dominican communities had special celebrations.

In St. Saviour’s in Dublin a special Holy Hour with Benediction was held in the evening, and Solemn Vespers was celebrated at 6pm. The included video shows a brief summary of the celebration.

 

Video of the Priestly Ordinations 2016

The Irish Dominican friars rejoice as eight of their brothers were ordained to the priesthood in Saint Saviour’s Dominican church, Dominick Street in Dublin. The ordaining prelate was Archbishop Robert Rivas OP of the Diocese of Castries in the Caribbean. Archbishop Rivas is part of the Irish Dominican province and came specially over to ordain our eight brothers in this special year of the 800th Jubilee of the Dominican Order.

The brothers ordained to the priesthood are brs David McGovern OP, Damian Polly OP, Ronan Connolly OP, Pat Desmond OP, Daragh McNally OP, Connor McDonagh OP, Eoin Casey OP and Kevin O’Reilly OP.

History of the Irish Province

This year the Dominican Order celebrates their 800th Jubilee of the foundation of the order.

This short video gives some history of the Irish Province since the Dominicans arrived in Ireland almost 800 years ago in 1224.

Opening of the Jubilee Year – 800 Years Dominicans

This short video gives an impression of the celebration of the start of the 800 years Jubilee of the Dominican Order. Many of the brethren came from all over Ireland to share in the celebration which included two talks, one on the history of the Irish Province, and a second on the Theology of Jubilee in the Old Testament. After the two talks there were was Solemn Vespers and a feastive dinner.
