Dominican Pilgrimage to Knock

isyear the National Dominican Pilgrimage to Knock took place on Sunday the 8th of October. Each year on the second Sunday of October all branches of the Dominican Family travel to the Shrine and lead the liturgical celebrations. As always pilgrims travelled from all the various Dominicans foundations throughout the island of Ireland. Especially noted were the youth coming from the Friary Youth Club in Dundalk and the prefects from Newbridge College.

The official program began at 14:30 with the Anointing of the Sick, followed by Mass at 15:00. After the Mass there was Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and the blessing of the sick followed by the Rosary. Knock is the National Marian Shrine of Ireland. On the 21st August, 1879, fifteen people from the village of Knock witnessed an Apparition of Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, a Lamb and cross on an altar at the gable wall of the Parish Church. The witnesses while reciting the Rosary, watched the Apparition in the pouring rain for two hours. Although they themselves were saturated not a single drop of rain fell on the gable or the apparition.

Simple Professions

Today four of our novices made their First Profession into the Dominican Order. Yesterday, on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross the Irish Province received five new novices. The Novices who have spend the last year in our Noviciate in Cork have now made their First Profession. The next step in their life as a Dominican is to go to our Studium, which is St. Saviour’s priory in Dublin. There they will study philosophy and theology in the coming years.

We congratulate brothers Gary Toman O.P., Ruaidhri Grieve O.P., Peter O’Kane O.P. and Ciaran Egan O.P. on their commitment as they continue their formation within the Dominican Order in the coming years.

Reception of the Habit

The Feast of the Exultation of the Cross is the Feast of the Irish Province of the Dominican Order. This is traditionally the day that postulant coming to join the Order receive the habit. This year, the noviciate, is a time of deeper discernment in which the novice comes to  appreciate  the calling that God is offering to follow the way St. Dominic on the way of holiness.

This year the Irish Province is blessed with five new novices. The new novices were clothed in the Habit of the Dominican Order “for a trail period” in which they are living the life as a Dominican more fully and both the Order and the Novices can further discern from God their path. After a the year’s noviciate profession is made, on the 15th of September, the Feast of the Our Lady of Sorrows.

During the Mass the new novices pray:

We are brought here by the mercy of God and we have come to undertake  your way of life.
By this following of Christ, may we grow in love of God and neighbour as men who desire to obtain their own salvation and the salvation of others. May we be men of the Gospel, following in the footsteps of our Saviour.

Please join the Dominican Order, and the Irish Province, in praying for out new Novices, for a fruitful noviciate in the year to come.

Solemn Profession of bro. Matthew Farrell O.P.

Congratulations to bro. Matthew Farrell O.P. on the occasion of his Solemn Profession. The Provincial, Fr. Gregory Carroll OP, received the profession of brother Matthew during the 11.30 am Mass in St. Saviour’s Church, Dominick Street. The Province extends its congratulations and best wishes bro Matthew as well as our prayers.

By profession, a Dominican dedicates himself to God, following Christ by leading an evangelical life in the Order. In this way his baptismal consecration becomes more filly effective. By the profession of obedience he binds himself to live the evangelical counsels, renouncing certain things of undoubted value without detriment to true human development. He embraces Christ’s self-emptying while sharing in his life in the Spirit. So, by being faithful, he gives a clearer witness in the Church to the values of the kingdom of heaven. A Dominican also promises to obey the Virgin Mary in filial devotion. By profession a Dominican promises to be obedient to St. Dominic and be faithful to his spirit and project.

Dominican Centenary Pilgrimage to Fatima (updated)

This week marks the Centenary Pilgrimage of the Irish Province of the Dominicans to Fatima. As it is a hundred year this year that the apparitions in Fatima happened the province organised a pilgrimage to pray and reflect on the events that happened in Portugal about a hundred years ago. On the pilgrimage are 87 pilgrims including eleven Dominicans of which four students. Some of the photos of the pilgrimage will be shared in this post.

Solemn Profession of bro. Jesse Maingot O.P.

On the Feast of the Queenship of Mary, the 22nd of August, bro. Jesse Maingot O.P. made his Solemn Profession in the Order of Friars Preachers.

When a young man joins the Dominican Order he starts with a Noviciate year to discern if God is calling him to join the Order. After the first year simple profession is made which vows the candidate for a limited amount of time to further discern the call. Usually this period is the start of formation as a Dominican brother and the study of philosophy and theology and last for about three or four years. After this period under simple or temporary vows the time comes to make profession for the rest of ones life, until death, which is called solemn vows. This is the step bro. Jesse has just made, to vow his life to God through his vocation to the Dominican Order and to serve God in this way the rest of his life.

Some photos of the Mass during which bro Jesse made his vows can be found below. Bro Jesse made his profession in his home country of Trinidad and Tobago into the hand of the provincial of the Irish Provence Fr. Gregory Carroll O.P.

Please keep bro. Jesse in your prayers as he continues his theological studies in St. Saviour’s in Dublin and journeys towards his priestly ordination.

 

First Mass Fr. Philip Mulryne OP

On Monday the 10th of July 2017 newly Ordained Fr. Philip Mulryne OP celebrated his First Mass in his home parish in St Oliver Plunkett Church in Belfast.

It was a great occasion and many family, friends and neighbours joined for the occasion and filled the church to the brim. Please find some photo’s of this great celebration below.

Ordination to the Priesthood of Fr. Philip Mulryne OP

Today in Dublin Reverend Brother Philip Mulryne OP was ordained a priest for the Dominican Order (Order of Preachers) by His Grace Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia OP during the 11.00am celebration of Mass in Saint Saviour’s Church, Dominican Street.  Archbishop Augustine Di Noia is Assistant Secretary at the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and he travelled from Rome for today’s special ceremony.

Philip Mulryne was born in Belfast and whilst playing for his parish soccer team: Saint Oliver Plunkett, Philip was spotted by a scout for Manchester United Football Club and invited as a 14 year old to go to Manchester for a trial.  Philip impressed and then signed a schoolboy contract for 2 years.  In 1994 Philip finished secondary school and went to Manchester United full time as a professional on a four-year contract.  Making his debut in 1997 against Ipswich Town Football Club, Philip played five times in total for the first team before being transferred to Norwich City Football Club in 1999, playing 135 times for Norwich City during a period of six years.  Philip made his debut for the Northern Ireland Football Team in 1997 against Belgium and went on to play 27 times for Northern Ireland, scoring three goals.

After short spells at Cardiff City and Leyton Orient, Philip retired officially from football in 2009 and entered the Diocesan Seminary of Saint Malachy’s Belfast, spending two years studying philosophy at Queens University Belfast and at the Maryvale Institute.  Philip completed his studies in philosophy and went to the Pontifical Irish College, Rome, to study theology for one year at the Gregorian University before discerning a call to religious life.  Philip entered the Dominican Novitiate House in Cork in 2012.

We rejoice with Fr. Philip and his family on this beautiful day. Please keep Fr. Philip OP in your prayers as he starts the next step of his life as a Dominican in his priestly vocation!

Reception of ministries

On Saturday November 5th Brs. Matthew Farrell and Jesse Maingot received the ministry of lector while Br. Gaweł Włodarczyk of the Province of Poland received the ministry of acolyte.

Fr. Gregory Carroll reminded those receiving the ministry of lector that as readers and hearers of God’s word, they had the responsibility of proclaiming the word of God in the liturgical assembly, as well as instructing children and adults in the faith and preparing them to receive the sacraments worthily.

Fr. Gregory reminded all the brothers that in proclaiming God’s Word to others, that they should accept it themselves in obedience to the Holy Spirit.  He encouraged all the brethren attending that they should meditate on the Word of God constantly, so that each day they would have a deeper love of the scriptures and in all we as Dominicans say and do show forth to the world our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

When speaking to Bro. Gaweł, Fr. Gregory reminded him as a man chosen for the ministry of acolyte he would have a special role in the Church’s ministry.  It was now his responsibility to assist priests and deacons in carrying out their ministry, and as a special minister to give Holy Communion to the faithful at the liturgy and to the sick.  By receiving this ministry Br. Gaweł should endeavour to understand the deep spiritual meaning of what he was undertaking and to offer himself daily to God as a spiritual sacrifice acceptable to him through Jesus Christ.

Again meditating on this ministry Fr, Provincial reminded all the brethren that in performing our various ministries we should show a sincere love for Christ’s Mystical Body, God’s holy people, and especially for the weak and the sick.

Find below some pictures of the Diaconate ordination of bro. Philip Mulryne OP in St. Saviour’s Dublin, which took place on Saturday the 29th of October.

Br Philip was ordained by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, during a Mass celebrated at 2 pm in St. Saviour’s. Bro. Philip was joined by his family, friends and many Dominican brothers on this joyous occasion.

Bro. Philip will with the help of God be ordained to the priesthood sometime during the coming year, so please keep him in your prayers as he continues his studies.
