Visit of the Master

We were delighted to welcome Fr Bruno Cadoré OP, the 87th Master of the Order of Preachers, to St Saviour’s Priory yesterday. He was here for an informal visit, as part of his initial attempts to ‘learn the Order’. He met with the students for nearly two hours, and listened intently to our stories, to our assessment of the situation of the Church in Ireland, and to our hopes and desires for the future. He spoke to us about his understanding of the Dominican vocation: ‘We should be like John the Baptist’, he said, ‘we must decrease and Christ must increase’. He said that we Dominicans must not seek to make ourselves visible, but that we should seek to make Christ visible and tangible for others. In short, the Dominican vocation means simply ‘introducing people to your best friend’. Photos inside!

Irish Lay Dominicans receive new members

Sheena Darcy and Monica Rapeanu were officially received as new members of the Lay Dominicans in Ireland during the celebration of the Eucharist at Saint Saviour’s priory, Dublin on the feast of the conversion of Saint Paul (January 25th). Sheena and Monica were joined by friends, colleagues, members of the lay Dominicans and a number of the friars of the community for the celebration.

Upcoming Vocation Weekends

The Irish Dominican friars are arranging some vocation weekends in the new year. Usually, these weekends are by invitation to those who are being accompanied by the vocations director for a period of time. However, since the proposed weekends are some time away, there is an opportunity to claim a place on some of these weekends if you are interested in our way of life by making contact with the vocations director soon. The dates for these ‘live-in‘ or ‘come and see‘ weekends are as follows:

21st to 23rd January 2011

25th to 27th February 2011

18th to 20th March 2011

Vocation weekends are designed to give participants an opportunity to live for a weekend with one of our communities in Ireland, to take a full and active part in the prayer and communal events of the friars, to meet many of the brothers (especially those in formation), to ask as many questions as you have about Dominican life and to experience the work and ministry of Dominican friars in Ireland. There will also be some input on our life by some of the brethren. Many of our younger brothers now in formation have found these weekends to be of great help in their discernment. Dominican Bishop Anthony Fisher Answers Questions on Vocation, Faith, and More.

Bishop Anthony Fisher is the Bishop of Parramatta, NSW Australia.  Before being consecrated a Bishop, he was a member of the Australian Province of the Order of Preachers.  In this video, Bishop Fisher answers questions at a local Theology on Tap at P.J. Gallagher’s Irish Pub near the University of Western Sydney in Parramatta on September 6, 2010.
