Saint Dominic’s Day in St. Saviour’s

Thursday the 8th of August was the Feast of Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order. The Papal Nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown was the main celebrant of the community Mass at 11 am.

The community was joined also by members of the Franciscan community of Merchants Quay and the guardian of the Capuchin community in Church Street and also visiting Dominicans from around the world.

In keeping with the old tradition a Franciscan gave the homily. On the Feast of Saint Francis, the 4th of October, a Dominican preaches in the Franciscan Church.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most significant Advent people of the New Testament. In this Gospel account of the Visitation we see that she sensed Elizabeth’s need and responded accordingly by reaching out and being present to her. Mary was thus a true disciple because she shared Christ’s presence, thereby making a significant difference in her cousin’s life. She literally took Christ to Elizabeth. This is the most important challenge to each of us who claim to know Christ, to share His presence with everyone we meet. But how can we do this?

31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mark 12:28-34

In the first commandment Jesus tells us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength”. The two commandments to ‘Love God’ and to ‘love our neighbour’, are well known as being at the centre of the Christian life. These two commands are so simple sounding, and yet, how hard it is to truly be able to say that we truly love God with all our heart and all our mind and all our soul and all our strength!
