Who We Are

We are members of the Order of Preachers (OP), better known as Dominicans. The Order was founded by St Dominic de Guzmán in 1216, in response to an urgent need for informed preaching. The Albigensian cult was gaining ground to an alarming extent, because most Christians at the time were very poorly instructed.

The cult saw the material world as evil, and escape from it the only route to salvation. Dominic’s sermons have not survived, but he must have placed a strong emphasis on the goodness of creation and of the human body: today we might use the word ‘holistic’ to describe this.

We do a great many different things as we try to respond to the needs of the Christian community in our time and place. We run churches and parishes; we work as chaplains and teachers in second- and third level colleges; we preach in retreat houses and at parish missions – indeed anywhere the opportunity arises; we write and publish books and articles, in print and digital form; we are involved in Scriptural and theological research; we are chaplains to hospitals and convents; we are missionaries in several parts of the world. Every talent can be used in the great work of proclaiming God’s word.
Fr Gregory Carroll OP has been elected Provincial of the Irish Dominicans for the period 2012-2016.  He succeeds Fr Pat Lucey OP who was Provincial since 2004.A native of Naas, County Kildare, fr Gregory entered the Dominican novitiate in Cork in 1966. He was ordained priest in Tallaght in 1973.

Fr Gregory has been prior of the Dominican student house in Dominick St, Dublin since 2010.  Before that he gained broad experience in pastoral and administrative roles in Cork, Drogheda and Tallaght, as well as the Irish Dominican mission in Trinidad and Tobago.  He has lectured in canon law and homiletics in the regional seminary in Trinidad.

His pastoral experience includes the roles of novice master, student master, of parish priest, vicar for the enclosed Dominican nuns in Trinidad, and a long commitment to the Marriage Encounter movement.He has been involved in financial and other administration in the Provincial office, Dominican Volunteers International, Priory Institute in Tallaght, and the Dominican Biblical Institute in Limerick.  
The Dominican friars came to Ireland in 1224.  They now number 175, distributed through 25 houses in Ireland and on missions abroad. In recent years a remarkable number of men have been attracted to their way of life, and this has led to a renewal throughout the province.

On the 24th of January last year, Pope Benedict XVI released his message for the 45th World Communications Day. In it, he reminds all Catholics of the need to witness to the truth in this new digital age of internet communication and social networking.  He reminds us that, "there exists a Christian way of being present in the digital world: this takes the form of a communication which is honest and open, responsible and respectful of others." 

The new iDoms Portal is a way of continuing to respond to the Pope's call for evangelization in the digital age. The iDoms portal provides access to articles, videos and audio files aggregated from the various websites of the Dominican Order. Future updates of the application will provide access to a wider variety of content and will introduce extra functionality.

The new app was created jointly by Friars from St. Joseph Province and the Province of Ireland and is suitable for both the iPhone/iTouch and the iPad.
